Introduction

Currently in 2021 many people have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The "one and a half meter society" is now a reality and it might even be part of our future in the long run. Keeping social distance remains critical for the reduction of the spread of COVID-19 and variations of the virus. Traveling has been restricted and we are currently in a worldwide lockdown. Taking some time off from work to go on a vacation across the world, seems like an alien concept in 2021. When visiting Amsterdam and seeing how crowded the city used to be compared to now, I couldn't imagine that we will return to the old ways of an overcrowded touristic city. The future of traveling and measurement has to change in order for tourism to be possible and safe again.

"Tourism must adapt to a life where COVID-19 may be under control, but where there is a high risk of another pandemic. Travel will be different, is the conclusion from experts. - (Benjamin, J. 2021)

For this project, I have decided to design something for a future where traveling for vacation is allowed but social distancing is still important. Now it's the perfect time to design such an application. Leisure businesses that rely on tourism are keen to open up after having made huge losses in the sectors, 32 billion for the touristic branch and 2,8 for the cultural sector (RTV Drenthe, 2021 & NU, 2021).

During the project, I have consulted foreign tourists and experts from the cultural branch, hospitality branch, and tourism branch to find ways we can control the stream of tourists in order to make it safer and more pleasant for people to enjoy a vacation in The Netherlands. *

The Problem

Overcrowding due to over-tourism has many negative side effects like pollution and a strain on the infrastructure of a city. But now with the COVID-19 pandemic, another negative effect has occurred in correlation with overcrowding. The spread of COVID-19. A large crowd of people at the same place and time has an impact on public health because it allows for the virus to spread more quickly. Experts say that tourism in its old form is not viable in the oncoming years due to the corona pandemic. The future is uncertain for businesses relying on the income of local and foreign tourists.

The Design Challenge

How might we overcome over-tourism by encouraging tourists to explore places that are safe for visiting during a post and or pandemic situation, so that overcrowding can be avoided and their stay is pleasant?
